This Cal Ripken Jr limited edition gold card, which comes packaged in this commemorative box, celebrates one of baseballs all-time greatest players. Ripken, the Baltimore Orioles shortstop, played in his 2,131st consecutive Major League Baseball game to become the sport's all-time iron man.
Ripken's endurance streak, which began on May 30, 1982, shattered the mark set by New York Yankees first baseman and Hall-of-Famer Lou Gehrig, nicknamed "The Iron Horse". Until Ripken came along, Gehrig's mark, which stood since his last game on May 2, 1939, was wiely considered to be one of baseball's "unbreakable" records.
Ripken not only surpassed Gehrig's iron-man standard, he plaed every inning of every Orioles game between June 5, 1982 and September 14, 1987. That streak of 8,243 consecutive innings is believed to be the longest of it's kind in baseball history.
