About this item

Item Details

2009-10 Topps Basketball stands as one of the most significant releases in modern basketball card history because it closed one chapter while eventually setting the stage for another. The product brought Topps’ NBA run to an end after 17 consecutive seasons dating back to 1992-93, and collectors would not see the brand return to licensed NBA cards for another 16 years. Because the set was released around the time Topps’ NBA license was winding down, the rookie cards do not picture players in full professional uniforms, giving the checklist a distinct look that separates it from other basketball products of the era. At the time, 2009-10 Topps Basketball felt like a final goodbye for the brand. Years later, with Topps regaining the NBA license and launching a new era beginning with 2025-26 Topps Basketball, the 2009-10 release now feels even more important. Between its outstanding rookie class, the inclusion of Topps Chrome cards within the product, and several high-end memorabilia elements typically associated with premium releases, 2009-10 Topps Basketball has become a true hobby classic worth revisiting.

The 2009-10 Topps Basketball base checklist includes 330 cards. The set features many of the biggest names of the era, including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant, while also capturing notable stars in jerseys collectors may not immediately associate with them, such as Shaquille O’Neal with the Phoenix Suns and Allen Iverson with the Detroit Pistons. The final 13 cards in the base set are rookies, headlined by Stephen Curry. That group also includes major names like James Harden, Blake Griffin, and DeMar DeRozan, giving the release one of the strongest rookie lineups of its time. Curry’s eventual rise into one of basketball’s all-time greats would have been enough on its own to make this product memorable, but the depth of the rookie class adds even more long-term appeal. Compared to modern releases, the parallel structure is relatively simple, but collectors can chase three numbered base parallel levels: Gold numbered to 2009, Black numbered to 50, and four different one-of-one Printing Plates.

Topps Chrome had already become one of the most important basketball brands after debuting in 1996-97. Although 2009-10 did not receive a standalone Topps Chrome Basketball product like earlier years, Chrome versions were still included as part of the main Topps release. In total, 110 cards from the base set received the Chrome treatment, including every rookie. These Chrome cards fall roughly two per Hobby Box and are numbered to 999. The Chrome parallel lineup includes Refractors numbered to 500, Gold Refractors numbered to 50, one-of-one Printing Plates, and one-of-one SuperFractors.

For Stephen Curry collectors, his 2009-10 Topps Chrome rookie cards and their Refractor parallels remain among his most recognizable and desirable early cards. The idea of combining Topps and Topps Chrome within the same product was not completely new, as 2001 Topps Traded and Rookies Baseball used a similar approach by mixing both styles within packs. Bowman Baseball had also used this format for several years before 2009-10 Topps Basketball. Beyond the Chrome cards, the only traditional insert set in the product is Draft Snapshot, a 50-card set that appears at a rate of 1:6 packs.

Autographs and memorabilia are another major part of the 2009-10 Topps Basketball checklist. Several sets focus on signatures, relics, or a combination of both, and all NBA-themed autograph cards also incorporate uniform pieces. These include Autograph Relics and Rookie Rewind Jumbo Jersey Autographs. All-Rookie Rewind Team Letterman Autographs feature letter patches from the backs of photo shoot jerseys, while Franchise Fabrics Autographs use manufactured patches. Notable signers include Shaquille O’Neal, Vince Carter, Russell Westbrook, and Derrick Rose.

The McDonald’s All-American Game Day Autographs bring a different kind of appeal, using signatures obtained at past McDonald’s All-American events and held until those players reached the professional level. James Harden is the key name in that autograph group. On the memorabilia side, 2009-10 Topps Basketball includes several major chase cards, highlighted by nearly 100 one-of-one Logoman patches and laundry tags. The Logoman checklist includes stars and legends such as Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, David Robinson, Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, and Karl Malone. Some of the laundry tags reach even deeper into basketball history, with names like Julius Erving, Jerry West, Pete Maravich, and Elgin Baylor.

Instead of relying only on standard jersey pieces, the All-Star Relics Dual cards, numbered to 199, and All-Star Relics Quad cards, numbered to 100, use memorabilia from All-Star Weekend gear. Championship Materials and Roundball Remnants complete the relic portion of the checklist, and both game-worn memorabilia sets also have patch parallels limited to 50 copies each.
